I have remote utilities installed on a client computer. I would like to invite a guest tech(another computer) to look at an issues, once I'm logged into the pc remotely. What is the best way to handle that, without giving them username/passwords to remote utilities.

Hey Brad,
You could use the Remote Utilities Security authentication method and create a temporary username and pass for the guest tech. Can delete the account after.
Or you could use Single Password authentication method and just change the password after the guest tech has finished.
You could run the remote utilities agent on the PC, you would have to stop your RU Host to run it. Then both of you could connect using the agent id and pass. Close the agent after and turn the host back on.
Just a few ideas I would do.

Thanks, I was hoping to make it easier for the oncoming tech(sometimes not tech savy), such as download the viewer, and type in this id, then I could just approve them on the computer side, for 1 time connections.David Silvera wrote:

Hello,
This can be done using the portable Viewer, which saves all its settings in the same folder as the main program executable (rutview.exe). Here's how to set it up:
1. Download the portable Viewer and unzip it.
2. Run rutview.exe from the folder.
3. Add your Host(s) to the address book. Depending on the authentication method used, you can choose to save the access password (single password or RU security login/password) in Connection properties -> Security (right-click on the host in the address book to access this).
4. (Optional) You can safely delete the 'assets' folder if the end user doesn’t need to use the MSI Configurator in the Viewer. This folder contains Host files, which may trigger some antivirus software.
You can distribute the folder in several ways, such as via a shared folder or a zip file for download. In this case, the user only needs to unzip the folder, run the Viewer, and initiate the connection from the address book.
To simplify it even further, you can create a connection shortcut and place it at the same level as the portable Viewer folder. This way, the user can start the remote session in the desired connection mode by simply clicking the shortcut, without needing to navigate inside the folder.
Hope this helps!

Additionally, if you choose to save the access password as described above, the end user won’t have visibility of it since it isn’t stored openly in the Viewer configuration files. If this is intended for one-time access, I recommend using RU Server security, as it offers several advantages:
- You can create multiple logins, each with specific permissions.
- You can enable 'Ask user permission' on a per-login basis, allowing for greater control.
- You can create an overarching login that allows temporary access for someone else.
Also, remember that you can enable multiple authentication methods on a single Host. This way, you can still connect using other methods, such as a single password or Windows security, depending on what is enabled along with RU Security.
Finally, since the Viewer attempts authentication methods in a specific order (first CSS, then WinSecurity, followed by RU Security, and finally a single password), you should explicitly select 'RU Security' in Connection properties -> Authentication tab for the portable Viewer setup. This will ensure that the user can log in using RU Security and won’t encounter a WinNT or CSS prompt, as these have higher authentication priority.
